The other half of the Gant clothing story was also working on the workshop floor a few metres away. The future Mrs Gant specialised in another tricky area, sewing button holes. First steps to stardom

Bernard Gant started small. The initial business provided Gant shirts to manufacturers, who took the quality, handmade goods and sold them on to discerning consumers. Over time, Gant clothing grew to incorporate the sons in the family and in the late half of the 20th century the brand set its focus on quality casual and sports wear. The aim was to provide clothes that were both durable and looked good, a balance not many designers were getting right at the time. Gant jumpers had to exude style while still remaining casual. The Gants achieved this aim and have since gone from strength to strength.
